Misericordia Health Centre: More To Us Than Meets the Eye

Misericordia Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba is excited to share with the International Misericordia Family its new strategic plan developed with input from staff, volunteers, patients and health-care partners.

The 2022-2026 plan reflects includes three specific and contemporary priorities:

  1. 1. Propel Eye Care Centre of Excellence into Canada’s premier eye institute

Misericordia’s dynamic Eye Care Centre of Excellence is the largest comprehensive surgical and treatment program in Western Canada. To become Canada’s premier eye institute MHC needs to build new operating theatres, have more specialty ophthalmologists on site and leverage university partnerships to expand our teaching and research capacity.

  1. 2. Construct a new Sherbrook development to meet Manitobans’ health-care needs

Replacing its 1907 Sherbrook building is essential for Misericordia to meet the future health-care needs of Manitobans. Augmenting the campus of care, the Sherbrook development will embody The Future of Care: home to new complementary programs and supporting the Eye Care Centre of Excellence’s transition to Canada’s premier eye institute.

  1. 3. Foster innovation to drive excellence in all we do

Misericordia will continue to build on its history of innovative, patient-centric compassionate care as it serves Manitobans through specialized health-care programs. Embracing new technology, partnerships and research opportunities will increase its communities’ engagement and drive excellence.

“We’ve always said there is more to Misericordia than meets the eye, and this report definitely showcases the unique programming we provide to Manitobans,” said Caroline DeKeyster, MHC President and CEO. “I believe our new plan provides a clear path forward while emphasizing the importance of remaining grounded and guided by the legacy of the Misericordia Sisters.”

History

The Misericordia Sisters began their service here in Winnipeg in 1898. The Sisters played a strong role in the community, taking care of young single mothers and their babies. Their commitment was to serve, a true reflection of their motto: Compassion of the heart for those in need.

The need for their caring service quickly grew. Their early days foreshadowed the development of expanded service that would bring the Sisters’ health-care provision to a new and broader base. Their facility, owned and operated by the Sisters, eventually expanded and became known as the Misericordia General Hospital.

During much of this early period, service expanded to meet the growing needs of this thriving prairie community. At that time, funding came from charity and private payment for services. Over the years, funding later came from the province.

More recently, the facility ownership changed from the Misericordia Sisters to the Misericordia Corporation within the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. Today, funding for programs and services is administered through the Winnipeg Health Region and charitable donations.

While our role has continued to change over the years, we remain guided by the tradition of the Misericordia Sisters.
